Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an organized, proven scientific approach to understanding and solving a range of behavior problems while teaching new skills. It is focused on analyzing, modifying and improving behavior using established principles that stress the direct manipulation of environmental variables. ABA is a mixture of psychological and educational techniques and tools that are utilized based upon the needs of each child to teach appropriate skills. This approach ethically reduces and eliminates inappropriate behaviors and teaches appropriate behaviors with a lasting long term effect. The goal of ABA is to encourage socially acceptable behaviors, while reducing problematic behaviors. ABA teaches the skills required to effectively promote better listening and stronger verbal communication. It works over time to rewire nerve synapses in the brain that are responsible for learning and comprehension.
ABA is widely recognized as a safe and effective treatment for autism. It has been endorsed by many state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Surgeon General and the New York State Department of Health.
